Audioriver’s Documentary Side

With only a few days to go before Audioriver begins, we are very happy to announce that the festival cinema will be making a small comeback this year. And it looks to be a very interesting affair, as there will be screenings of documentaries which have never or very ralery been shown before in Poland. What’s more, it will all be held at the air conditioned Przedwiosnie Cinema.

The program for this year’s festival cinema aims to show independent music from a number of different perspectives. All the movies screened at the Przedwiosnie theater will bring together fans of many different genres of alternative music. All the electronica fans out there will have the opportunity to get to see how the Muslim punk scene in the United States was born, while the indie fans in attendance will have the chance to get to know a lesser known and not too commercial side of hip hop.

The festival cinema will be open to the public on Saturday July 30th. The first screening is set to commence at 12:00, with ‘Strange Powers: Stephin Merritt and the Magnetic Fields’, which tells the story of one of the best known songwriters in the US.  The film, which took a total of 10 years to shoot, includes interviews with the likes of Peter Gabriel and Sarah Silverman. The picture received the Grand Jury Award at Outfest 2010, as well as an award for the film’s director at Starigrad-Paklenice.

After that, at 14:00, ‘Speaking In Code’, an amazing film about people for whom electronic music is everything, is slated for screening. The picture tells the story of true diehards, who manage to speak and present their scene to a wider audience in such a way that even fans of classical music will have no problem understanding. It is also worth mentioning that ‘Speaking In Code’ includes interviews with some of this year’s headliners, such as Robag Wruhme, Michael Mayer and Modeselektor.

Moving on, at 16:00, we change things up a bit and move to the world of hip hop, but not the kind we are bombarded with on daily basis on television and the radio. Here, instead of luxury automobiles and bling bling, you will be shown the true ghetto, and the two amazing forms of dance it spawned. Forms of dance full of energy and aggression. ‘Rize’ is the directorial debut of famed American photographer David LaChapelle, who once again proves to the world that he has an eye like no other.

And finally, ‘Taqwacore: The Birth of Punk Islam’, an amazing film about the birth of the punk scene in the States based on a novel. Written by an American who later converted to Islam, the book told the story of an imaginary scene of punk bands Stateside. And as it turned out, thanks in the most part to the novel, a scene actually did evolve. Start: 18:00.

All screenings will be held at NoveKino Przedwiosnie on 5a Tumska Street. Tickets will be available at the box office for 10 zl and 5 zl (for those with Audioriver 2011 wristbands or tickets).
